Bailiff Bridge Blog

Welcome to the Bailiff Bridge Blog

Origins and Name

Bailiff Bridge derives its name from a historic bridge over the Wyke Beck, where a bailiff once collected tolls. The earliest recorded mention of the settlement dates back to 1374, when it was known as "Bailibrigge" in the West Court Rolls.

Historical Development

Originally part of the township of Hipperholme with Brighouse, Bailiff Bridge has evolved from a small hamlet into a significant local community. The village's development can be traced through several key periods:

Industrial Heritage

  • Once a thriving coal mining area
  • Later became a typical West Yorkshire mill village
  • Played a crucial role in the region's textile industry during the Industrial Revolution
  • Several mills provided employment for local residents
