Ey up! Harry Facks here to tell you about one of Halifax's most interesting thoroughfares - King Edward Street. Let me share what I know about this historic part of our beloved town.

King Edward Street has quite a tale to tell. According to historical records, it was originally connected to Alexandra Street, which was named after Queen Alexandra, the Consort of King Edward VII. The construction of Alexandra Street was actually authorized by the 1853 Improvement Act - quite a significant piece of Halifax's development, if I do say so myself!

The street has seen many changes over the years. From what I've gathered from the archives:

  1. Historical Significance:
  • Part of Halifax's Victorian development
  • Named in honor of King Edward VII
  • Connected to Alexandra Street, forming an important town center route
  1. Notable Features:
  • Was home to various businesses and shops during the Victorian era
  • Part of Halifax's commercial district
  • Helped connect different parts of the growing town center
  1. Modern Development:
  • The area has maintained its commercial importance
  • Many of the original Victorian buildings still stand
  • Now forms part of Halifax's shopping district
