Cat i' th' Window - 10 Lower Kirkgate, Halifax (aka Cat)

In the right hand corner of Matalan carpark -  bottom of Halifax Minster (corner of Lower Kirkgate and Berry Lane).

Opened in 1822. Closed in 1928

There was a spring in the cellar of the pub – the water of which flowed through the nearby Parish Church graveyard – fed a well which was used by a community of 800 people in the nearby Berry Lane area. The water supply reached the 10ft deep cellar after passing the dipping place by the side of the bridge, a little below a main sewer. The sewage would often find it's way into the cellar.

It was a Webster's pub [1864, 1866]. On 18th April 1928, the property was sold to Halifax Corporation and the licence was transferred to the Shay Hotel.
