Quite a Prospect

The prospect from Prospect Street, Halifax, in 1962 was markedly different from the view today.

This picture was taken in June of that year, not long after Prospect Street, on the hillside between New Bank and Claremount had been cleared as part of major redevelopment of the area. New Bank would be altered dramatically but Prospect Street itself is only now seeing fresh changes, with new housing and cobbled streets, including one - it was never given a name - said to be the steepest street in Halifax.

Was this the steepest street in Halifax?

The view from Prospect Street has altered greatly, with Dean Clough Mills - then still operated by Crossleys Carpets - one of the few large buildings that remains.

Most of the mills and other buildings in the centre of the picture have been demolished and the Haley Hill high rise flats dominate the scene today.

In the top right hand corner of the top picture can be seen row upon row of terraced housing, much of which had been demolished by the early 1970s to make way for the new inner ring road. In the centre of that picture can be seen a cluster of prefabricated homes that stood on the site for several years before making way for the tower blocks.
